In 1987, Anita began work on her follow-up album "Giving You The Best That I Got" in between a busy performance schedule. She won two Grammy awards: Best R&B Female Performance for the album "Rapture" and Best R&B Song for "Sweet Love".
In 1986 she signed with Elektra, and at the same time was an executive producer on "Rapture", her debut album for the label, which sold over 6 million records worldwide. He contacted her in 1982 and offered her a deal which at first she refused, but when Smith increased the amount of his original offer, and the contract was approved legally, she accepted, releasing the album "Songstress" in 1983. In 1981, Otis Smith, who was the man behind Chapter 8's contract, formed his own label, Beverly Glenn. However, when Ariola was bought out by Arista, the group's contract was not renewed.Īnita returned to Detroit, finally working with a law firm as a receptionist. In 1975 she successfully auditioned for the group Chapter 8, having been approached by bass player David Washington, and spent the next few years playing in and around Detroit, eventually signing with Ariola, releasing an album in 1979. She began singing in church choir when she was 12 and at 16 sang in a local group along with high school friends. Contract disputes and studio setbacks limited Baker’s recorded output until 2004, when she released the concert album A Night of Rapture Live and the studio album My Everything in the years since, she’s toured tirelessly, playing festivals like the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival as well as more intimate theaters, asserting her vocal power and passion to audiences around the world.Anita was born Januin Toledo, Ohio and grew up in Detroit, Michigan. She built on that reputation with the albums that followed, including 1988’s Giving You the Best That I Got and 1994’s Rhythm of Love. Rapture combined Baker’s delivery with lush production on romance-minded tracks like “Sweet Love” and “Caught Up In the Rapture,” establishing her as one of R&B’s superstar ’80s vocalists. That got the attention of Elektra Records, which signed her and issued her breakout album, Rapture, in 1986. Eventually Otis Smith, a legendary R&B executive who had worked with Chapter 8, approached Baker about recording for his upstart label, and she released her debut full-length, The Songstress, in 1983. She joined the soul group Chapter 8 in 1975, and although they were successful in Detroit, they had an abortive record-business experience that led to Baker turning away from music for a while. Born in Toledo, OH, in 1958, Baker grew up in Detroit, where she sang in a gospel choir while listening to vocal greats like Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald.
